If you’re an appetizer fanatic like I am, you know the power of a good chip. Whether it’s made from corn tortillas, plantains, potatoes, pita bread, or sweet potatoes, you can count me in.

This easy recipe teaches you how to make wonton chips in the air fryer, meaning you can get all the flavor and crunch you crave without needing to deep fry anything!

  • Made with just 3 ingredients. I love a short and sweet grocery list, and I’d bet you’ll only have to buy 1 thing to make the best wonton chips you’ve ever tasted.
  • Takes less than 20 minutes. It’s as simple as 1-2-3, and you’ll have a big pile of deliciousness to sink into your favorite dips.
  • Super versatile. Add your favorite flavors, cut into different sizes, or make using different methods. No air fryer? No problem. I also teach you the method for making baked or fried wonton chips.

RECIPE WALK-THROUGH

Ingredients

You only need 3 ingredients to make crispy wonton chips in the air fryer:

  • Wonton Wrappers â€“ You should be able to find these in any well-stocked grocery store or international market. Feel free to swap in Egg Roll Wrappers if needed!
  • Canola Oil â€“ Any neutral-flavored, high-smoke point oil will work. You can also use a non-stick cooking spray!
  • Kosher Salt â€“ I like the wide grain of kosher salt because it’s harder to overdo it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are wonton chips made of?
Wonton chips are simply made with wonton wrappers (which are typically made with flour, egg, and water) plus oil and salt. Note that depending on the brand, you may be able to find vegan wonton wrappers or gluten-free wrappers, depending on your needs.

What oil should I use to air fry wontons?
Whenever you’re cooking at high temps (e.g. above 350°F), you should consider using a high-smoke point oil. For this air fryer recipe, I used canola oil because it is easy to find and inexpensive. Feel free to swap in vegetable, corn, peanut, grapeseed, or avocado oil if you prefer. I do not suggest using olive oil, as it has a smoke point of closer to 375°F.

Serving Suggestions

These light and crispy chips are delectable on their own, but they also play nicely with other dips like:

  • Honey Mustard Sauce (Try swapping in spicy Chinese mustard for the yellow and dijon mustard for some nose-clearing heat!)
  • Crab Rangoon Dip
  • Sweet & Sour Sauce
  • Gingery Salsa
  • Peanut Sauce
  • Coconut Chutney

Variations

No air fryer? No problem. There’s more than one way to fry a wonton chip:

  • Fried Wonton Chips â€“ Heat about 1.5 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed dutch oven until it reaches 360F. Working in batches, carefully place wonton triangles in the oil for 1-3 minutes, or until they puff up and become golden. You may need to flip them as they cook. Remove to a paper towel-lined tray and sprinkle with salt while they’re still hot. Continue with the remaining chips.
  • Oven-Baked Wonton Chips â€“ If you don’t have an air fryer, you can still make tasty chips. Line two sheet trays with parchment paper. Brush or spray the wonton wrappers with oil and sprinkle with salt. Bake in a preheated oven at 400F for 5 minutes, then rotate the pans top to bottom and back to front and return to the oven for another 5-10 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  • Crispy Wonton Strips â€“ Want some crispy texture for your next salad or to add on a bowl of soup? Follow either the air fryer, oven, or deep frying instructions listed, but start with long, skinny strips instead of triangles.
  • Flavored Wonton Chips â€“ Once your wonton chips are fully cooked, feel free to season them to your heart’s content with Chinese 5-Spice, Everything But The Bagel Seasoning, Ranch Seasoning, or even Finely Grated Parmesan Cheese.

Storage Tips

The Best Way to Store Leftovers

Once made, you can serve the chips straight away or let them cool to room temperature before storing them in an airtight container. They should last for up to a week on the counter!

PRO TIP: If you have a bag of silica left from your last bag of jerky or newest pair of shoes, drop it in the bottom of the container with your wonton chips. It’ll help keep them nice and crispy for longer!

Recipe Tips

  • Make sure the parchment doesn’t cover the vents. Air frying needs air to work. Make sure your protective cover doesn’t block where it blows out!
  • Work in batches as needed. Make sure you give the wontons ample space so the air can circulate well. If you can’t fit everything in a single layer, you’ll need to work in batches.
  • Seasoning sticks better when hot. If you plan on adding any tasty spice mixes to your fried wonton chips, be sure to add them when the chips are fresh from the fryer/pot/oven.
