This is the best, easiest Honey Butter recipe! Only two ingredients are need to make this rich, sweet and creamy butter topping for breads, biscuits, muffins and more.

I love making compound butters like my easy Homemade Garlic Butter and this sweet honey butter. It’s a nice flavor boost from the regular boring spreads we use every day. Plus it’s perfect for topping so many different things, from muffins and biscuits to sweet potatoes and waffles!

Easy Honey Butter Recipe

I am obsessed with honey butter. I would put it on everything if I could! It’s really easy and whips up in minutes. You could eat it straight out of the bowl and I totally wouldn’t judge you.

The key to a good compound butter is to let the butter come to room temperature. This way it can whip up nice and fluffy before adding the flavorings. You can vary the flavor by adding different varieties of honey, a pinch of ground cinnamon or a splash of vanilla extract. Be sure to scroll down to check out some of our favorite additions.

What is Honey Butter used for?

  • Toast, muffins, bagels, Beer Bread – just a simple spread to sweeten up your snacks.
  • Meats – Grill chicken tenders on the stovetop using honey butter and a little garlic.
  • Seafood – Melt in a skillet with some garlic and saute shrimp or spread it on salmon before baking.
  • Veggies – Lots of veggies play nicely with sweet honey, like roasted carrots, corn, sweet potatoes and butternut squash.

How to Make Honey Butter

This easy recipe is crazy simple with just a couple of steps. I definitely recommend using a hand mixer for this or a stand mixer if you have one.

  1. Place softened butter in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until it’s fluffy and smooth. Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature. The brand of butter doesn’t really matter as long as it’s real butter and not a blend with oil. I prefer to use unsalted and add the salt myself to get the flavor just right.
  2. Pour in honey and add a pinch of salt. Beat again until smooth. The salt here is optional and you can leave it out if you’re watching your salt intake
  3. Pat yourself on the back because you just made a delicious batch of creamy, sweet honey butter!

Flavor Variations

You can taste the honey butter once it’s mixed and add another pinch of salt if you want or a little more honey if you want it a little sweeter. You can also upgrade the flavor with some different variations.

  • Citrus – 1 tablespoon orange, lemon or lime zest
  • Sweet Cinnamon – 2 teaspoons cinnamon + 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Honey Vanilla – 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • Spicy – 1 teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pumpkin pie – 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • Apple Pie – 2 teaspoons apple pie spice

Storage and Freezing tips

Homemade Honey Butter will keep in the fridge for several months. Store in an airtight container in the fridge to keep it fresh. Let sit out 10 minutes to soften before using.

To freeze, wrap butter in plastic wrap in a log shape and twist the ends. Wrap again in foil or place in a ziploc bag. Be sure to label it so you know what it is!

  • In a large metal bowl and with an electric mixer, beat butter and honey together until well combined and smooth.
  • Store in a tightly sealed container in the fridge, and let sit out to soften when ready to use.
  • Spread on toast, rolls and more.
