Easy Air Fryer Hot Dogs Recipe

As hot dog recipes go, they’re usually pretty simple. You’re either boiling them, sauteing on the stove, or grilling outside. But since the invention of the air fryer, there’s a new way to get super juicy air fryer hot dogs with that signature snap when you bite into one.

Placing your dogs in the basket of an air fryer and cooking them this way heats the hot all the way around and give it a little bit of char. You can see they plump up and become extra juicy as they cook right in front of your eyes! They taste like you grilled them and you barely had to touch them!

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Cook in less than 10 minutes – These air fryer hot dogs cook so quickly you barely have time to whip up a simple side!
  • Juicy and Charred – They get juicy on the inside, but lightly charred on the outside just like your favorite ballpark hot dogs!
  • Classic Summer Favorite – Does anything say summer more than hot dogs with all the fixings?! Air fryer hot dogs are the perfect summer lunch or dinner!

Ingredients For Air Fryer Hot Dogs

  • Hot Dogs – Any brand of hot dogs will work here, but my favorite are Nathan’s Bun Length Beef Franks. Hebrew National is my second favorite.
  • Hot Dog Buns – In my experience, store brand buns aren’t as sturdy. I prefer Ball Park or bakery style brioche buns.
  • Toppings – Ketchup, mustard, relish, onions.

How To Make Hot Dogs in the Air Fryer

See the recipe card below for full, detailed instructions

Making air fried hot dogs is super quick and easy!

  1. Prep – Start by preheating the air fryer to 390 degrees F. If your air fryer doesn’t have a ‘preheat’ button, you can just let it run empty for a few minutes to heat the basket.
  2. Air Fry Hot Dogs – Add the hot dogs to the air fryer basket and air fry for 8 minutes.
  3. Air Fry Hot Dog Buns – Remove the hot dogs and place them inside the buns then return to the basket and air fry for 2 minutes more to warm the buns.
  4. Serve – Serve with your favorite hot dog toppings.

FAQs

Do you need to preheat the air fryer?

While you don’t need to preheat the air fryer, for best results I like to! Preheating the air fryer is as simple as letting it run empty for a few minutes. This heats up the basket which helps give foods extra crisp and char on the outside.

Do I need to spray the basket with cooking spray?

You don’t need to spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray for this recipe. The hot dogs won’t stick to the basket.

What is the best air fryer?

I have used a couple of different fryers, and have researched several. Here are a few of the best rated options: Instant Vortex 6-Quart, Cosori Air Fryer Max XL, and my personal favorite and the one I use regularly is the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer.

Serving Suggestions

These are ready to be paired with your favorite summer sides! We love serving them with side dishes like Fresh Corn Salad with Tomatoes, Slow Cooker Baked Beans, this creamy Southern Potato Salad, or crispy Air Fryer Tater Tots.

Make sure to have a variety of toppings, like ketchup, mustard, relish, pickles, and onions.

Variations

  • Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs – Wrap each hot dog in a piece of bacon. You can use toothpicks to secure the bacon. Air fry at 390 degrees F for 8 minutes then rotate the hot dogs and air fry for another 3-5 minutes until the bacon is cooked to your liking. Make sure to remove the toothpicks before serving!
  • Cut Slits in Hot Dogs – If you like more toasty edges, you can cut shallow slits across the top of each hot dog. This also gives little crevices for the toppings.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

Storage – Leftover hot dogs can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Go ahead and keep the dogs and buns together.

Reheating – You can reheat the hot dogs in the buns in the air fryer for a few minutes until warmed again.

Recipe Tips

  • Heating the buns in the air fryer is optional – This step can be skipped if you’d like. Instead heat buns in the microwave, or enjoy them room temperature.
  • Adjust quantity – You can make as few or as many hot dogs as you’d like! If you’re serving a crowd, you’ll need to cook in multiple batches.
  • Don’t crowd the air fryer – For best results, you want room for the hot air to circulate in the air fryer.
  • Toppings Tip – For less mess, add your topping to the bun and then place your hot dog on top! This is an ultra pro tip I always used with my kids.
  • Leftovers – Use leftover hot dogs to make the summertime favorite Franks and Beans.
