FAQs
An air fryer is a countertop appliance that is very similar to using the convection setting in your oven. A fan circulates the hot air which is what helps food get nice and crispy AND cook faster than in the oven. Using an air fryer is a great way to replicate your favorite fried foods in a healthier way!
Unlike an oven, an air fryer doesn’t need to be preheated. This saves so much time when it comes time to cook dinner! Although it isn’t required, many recipes like this one recommend heating it up for just a few minutes to get crispier results.
While many foods in the air fryer need to be cooked in an even layer, fries can be piled on top of each other. This is why it’s important to toss them in the middle of cooking so they all cook evenly. But you don’t want to overfill your air fryer basket. Don’t fill the basket more than 2/3 full to prevent overcrowding.
Serving Suggestions
Serve these your air fryer fries with burgers like these juicy grilled hamburgers or turkey burgers. The kids will love these cheesy baked chicken tenders.
Dipping Sauces
One of the best parts about french fries is dipping them in your favorite sauce. Here are some of my family’s favorites:
- Ketchup
- Ranch
- BBQ Sauce – You can use store bought or make your own homemade bbq sauce.
- Honey Mustard
- Chik Fil A Sauce
- Cheese Sauce – Dipping fries in this spicy nacho cheese sauce will be a major crowd pleaser.
Seasoning Ideas
You can’t go wrong with simple salt on your french fries, but it’s also fun to mix it up with some other seasonings!
- Cajun – Use a cajun or creole seasoning blend for a spicy kick.
- Taco – Use taco seasoning on the fries for a fun spin.
- Garlic Salt
- All Purpose Seasoning – with garlic powder, onion powder and paprika.
Storage and Reheating
For best results, I recommend cooking the french fries right before serving. But if you do have leftovers, here’s what to do with them.
- Storage – Leftover cooked french fries can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days. They will lose their crispiness in the fridge.
- Reheating – I recommend reheating the fries in the air fryer again until warmed. Although they won’t get as crispy as they were when you first made them, they will still crisp up some.
- Season right after spraying – Sprinkling the salt after spritzing with cooking spray helps the salt stick to the fries.
- Toss while cooking – This step is important! Tossing them makes sure that they get evenly browned and crispy. It’s okay if the fries are piled on top of each other as long as you toss them in the middle of cooking.
- Watch closely at the end – Toward the end of cooking, the fries will go from golden to over cooked very fast. Compared to baking in the oven, air frying crisps up the fries at a lower level of golden.
- Restaurant Fries – Air frying works for leftover restaurant fries too! Don’t leave your leftover fries behind, toss them in the air fryer and cook at 400 degrees for a few minutes, just until they’re crispy.
