Homemade Tortilla Chips

Homemade Tortilla Chips are way tastier than store bought. They have a crispy bite to them that you just can’t get in a bag.

The best flavor comes from frying your chips, but I don’t deep fry anything in my house. Grease splatters everywhere and makes a mess, even when you think it isn’t. Now that I have an air fryer, my world has been opened to healthier fried foods without the mess.

There’s no need to deep fry tortilla chips when you can make crispy, delicious chips in your air fryer. It takes just minutes to make and only three ingredients!

How To Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

If you have tortillas in your fridge, you’re on your way to having chips. Grab those, some olive oil cooking spray (or any cooking spray), and some coarse salt.

I tested both corn tortillas and flour tortillas and while both come out great, the corn tortillas turn out slightly crispier so I prefer them.

  1. Slice the tortillas into 6-8 pieces depending on the size tortilla you have. I use a pizza cutter to make it really easy.sliced tortillas to make air fryer tortilla chips
  2. Spray the tortillas lightly with cooking spray, then sprinkle with salt.
  3. Lay the tortillas into the air fryer basket, without letting them overlap, and cook for 3 minutes at 350 degrees. Flip them over, give them another light spray, add more salt (if you think they need it – the amount of salt is a personal preference), and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until browned and crisp.
  4. Air fryers do vary from brand to brand. Some require pre-heating, mine does not. Keep an eye on yours – it may take more or less time to crisp up the chips.
  5. That’s it! Remove from the basket and they will continue to crisp as they cool. Once they have cooled, you’re ready to start dipping.

Baked Tortilla Chips

Don’t have an Air Fryer? You can bake your homemade tortilla chips!

If you don’t yet have an air fryer, you can also bake the chips. Follow the same steps – slice, spray, salt – then line in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 7 minutes at 350°F, flip, lightly spray with cooking spray, then bake another 2-3 minutes or until crisp and browned.

Serving Suggestions

These chips make the perfect snack or party appetizer. Serve them with Spicy Nacho Cheese sauce, Homemade Salsa, Pineapple Salsa, or Guacamole.

You can also pile them high with toppings and turn them into Sheet Pan Nachos, Buffalo Chicken Nachos, or Loaded Chicken Nachos.

If you want to add another layer of flavor, squeeze some lime juice over the chips. Want to spice them up? Sprinkle on some cajun seasoning, chili powder, or cayenne pepper. Want to sweeten them up? Sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar.

How to Store Them

Air fryer tortilla chips will stay fresh for up to two weeks if you store them in an airtight container or a zip top bag at room temperature. Do not freeze or refrigerate.

If anyone is using a Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Toaster Oven, you’ll get better results going a total of 7 minutes cooking instead of the 5 to 6 listed here. At 6 minutes, they will remain chewy in the center even well after cooling. 8 minutes is a bit dark, but not burnt.

I’m trying to Cut Back on Oils can I Air fry in Toaster oven without Spraying with Oil . Could I spray with Water then add Salt . Thank You

    1. Kristin Maxwell says:

Spraying them with water would just make them soggy. The oil is an important part of this recipe. You could certainly try it though.

Thanks for this! These were really great! Much better than I expected. I used some old tortillas lying around (that I probably would have thrown in the trash otherwise) to test this recipe out so I wasn’t expecting much….but they still came out better than almost any other tortilla style chip I’ve had!

I did do it a bit differently though. I heard that you don’t really need to use oil for these so I tried doing this with no oil and sprinkled salt on afterwards but they were still pretty good even without salt! I also tried using multiple tortillas. The basket on this airfryer was small but after some trial and error I found that two corn tortillas cut as you mentioned and spread out evenly with some overlap in the basket still came out just as good as one with even cooking. I shook the basket instead of flipping them half way through. 3 cut tortillas at a time was too much though and the fryer didn’t cook them as evenly although they still weren’t too bad.

    Thanks again for the recipe!

These are OUTSTANDING!! I will no longer buy store tortilla chips. Ever.
Since it was my first time, I overcooked them a bit but they were still excellent. Thank you!!!

I worked at a Mexican Restaurant and they use Lawry’s seasoned salts. Awesome Taste

I have so many packages of corn tortillas in my freezer that I need to use up that I think that I will try a batch this way as well as just salted. Thanks for the tip.
