Pin this recipe for later! What is a BLT? It’s Bacon Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich. It’s a nostalgic favorite, but in the realm of sandwiches this classic isn’t anything fancy.
For this sandwich, I kept with the classic filling – bacon, lettuce and tomatoes, but added a tangy lemon dill mayo. The zing of lemon juice and lemon zest along with the dill make this sandwich anything but boring.
RECIPE WALK-THROUGH
How To Make A BLT Sandwich
See the recipe card below for full, detailed instructions
Pick your bread wisely. I like a nice white sandwich bread. Any bread will work. I am partial to sourdough bread or a nice rustic wheat bread. Toast it til it’s crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
A typical BLT will have mayo, but I took it up a notch and added more flavor with lemon and dill. Whisk the spread together and spread it onto your toasted bread, fully covering every inch, then begin stacking your sandwich fillings.
Get some big, juicy, ripe tomatoes. You can use Roma tomatoes or regular tomatoes on the vine, even chopped up cherry tomatoes will work.
For the lettuce you want something nice and crisp, like Romaine or iceberg. Wash the leave and dry them really well with paper towels.
The key to a good BLT is the bacon. You want good quality bacon, cooked until it’s nice and crispy. No soggy, floppy bacon here. So this is where you spend your money, folks. So bake your bacon in the oven, crisp it in the microwave, use whatever is your preferred method.
Once you’ve stacked your sandwich, cut it in half and enjoy that bad boy with some potato chips, fruit salad, Sweet Potato Wedges, or Air Fryer Frozen French Fries!
Recipe Tips
- Choose rip, juice tomatoes. Slice them with a small, serrated knife.
- Regular or thin bacon is best. Thicker bacon can be harder to bite into.
- The lemon dill mayo is optional but incredibly flavorful. You can use regular mayo if you prefer.
- Use a large serrated knife when cutting your sandwich to keep it from pulling apart.
Storage Tips
How to Store a Leftover Sandwich
While these sandwiches are obviously best when fresh, you can save it for a day or two store in a resealable plastic bag in the fridge.
It would be best to simply store the sandwich fillings separately.
