These Witch Hat Cupcakes are green colored yellow cake mix cupcakes, topped with a homemade chocolate frosting, a dab of green candy melts, and finished with a cute witch hat!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cupcake pan with paper liners preferably a Halloween color.
Prepare cake mix according to the box.
Add the electric green gel food color to the cake batter and thoroughly incorporate.
Fill the liners 3/4 full with cake batter.
Place into the oven and bake for 16 - 17 minutes or until done. Insert a toothpick into the cupcakes and if it comes out clean, it's done.
Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
Frosting
In a large bowl, add in the butter and cocoa powder. Beat with a hand mixer on medium until incorporated.
Add in the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract and beat until it comes together. Turn mixing on high and beat an addition 30 seconds.
Scoop the frosting into a piping bag fitted with a wilton 1M tip.
Pipe a swirl on top of the cooled cupcakes.
Witch Hats
In a microwave-safe bowl, add in half the green candy melts. Microwave for 30 second intervals and stir after each time. Repeat until candy melts are completely melted.
Add the melted candy melts in a sandwich bag. Cut a small hole into the corner of the sandwich bag.
Lay out 16 Oreos and Kisses on a piece of wax paper. If you were able to make more cupcakes with your box mix, make sure you have the same number of Oreos and Kisses laid out.
Pipe a dot of candy melt in the center of the cookie.
Add a candy kiss to the top of the candy melt and press down until some of the green squishes out the sides. Repeat with all of the cookies and candy kisses.
Microwave the remaining 1/4 cup of green candy melts. Microwave for 30 second intervals and stir after each time. Repeat until the candy melts are completely melted.
Add in the vegetable oil and stir until thoroughly incorporated.
Add the candy melts into a sandwich bag and let cool for 3 - 4 minutes. Cut a small hole into the corner of the bag.
Add a decent size spot of candy melt to the top of each swirl of frosting. Add a witch hat to each of the spots of candy melt before moving to the next. This is to make sure the candy melts don't harden up before you get the hat on.
Notes
Try different colors of dye and candy melts to turn these into wizard hats!
